A 77-year-old step grandfather has been arrested and detained in police custody after allegedly raping his 4-year-old step granddaughter in East Honiara Monday this week.
Police alleged that the victim was raped in the house where they were staying at the Top Timber area in Ranadi.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ian Vaevaso told the media this morning that about 1pm on August 10th, the victim was playing in the house whilst her mother was breastfeeding her younger sister in their room. The suspect was in another room.
Vaevaso said the suspect called the victim to his room and allegedly raped her, using his fingers.
He said: “After the mother didn’t hear any noises from the child she got up and peeped through a small hole on the walling of the room and saw the small girl sitting in the room— facing the suspect – and she saw the step grandfather used his fingers to poke the private part of the girl.”
According to Vaevaso, the mother then called her daughter and asker her about what the suspect had done to her.
He said upon that story, the mother went and reported the story at the Naha Police Station that led to the arrest of the step grandfather.
The suspect was arrested and has since been placed in custody where he was charged with one count of rape.
“This is a very sad story again (there was similar story like this week) because the people involved are the persons who are put in trust for the very people they sexually assaulted,” Vaevaso told the media.
