Malaita’s key airfield at Gwaunaru is undergoing a facelift thanks to the Provincial Government and Malaitans who supported the improvement to the airport’s arrival and departure building.
A report sent to SBMOnline today acknowledges that the Gwaunaru airfield is one of the busiest domestic routes of the Solomon Airlines – but the airfield building has been an eye sore for many years—as repair works has been neglected by the responsible authority.
The negligence has resulted in no proper toilets and there was no running water for the travelling passengers.
Early this year, the Daniel Suidani led MARA Government had announced its restorative policy to the economy. During that time he encouraged Malaitans to return to the basics in all facets of life—with the aim to do away with the free handout mentality.
As a result, the province and helpful Malaitans stepped in to fund the refurbishment to the airport building.
“As we can see now the Gwaunaru airfield building is getting a facelift. A new water tank is now installed, there are now proper running toilets with water, and a much bigger space for passengers and their luggage,” the statement says.
