PNA ANNUAL MINISTERIAL MEETING CONCLUDED

Solomon Islands Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Hon. Nestor Giro who is the current Vice-Chairman of PNA presided over the meeting.

The meeting sets the platform for PNA Ministers to discuss, guide and endorse matters relating to sustainability, conservation measures and economic benefits of our shared tuna resources.

The PNA region controls the world’s largest sustainable tuna purse seine fishery. PNA Members include the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu plus Tokelau.

Key presentations during the meeting among others include: the 2021 annual reports, 2021 & 2022 financial reports, PNA fishery overview and economics, the PNA policy and fisheries management, the Palau Arrangement on vessel day scheme for both purse-seiners and long-liners, the Federated State of Micronesia (FSMA) Arrangement, and PNA compliance committee matters.

In his concluding remarks, Hon. Giro reiterated the importance of the regions tuna fishery and the need for continued collaboration to gain maximum benefits from our shared resource.

“We have discussed matters of great importance for our countries in relation to our shared tuna resources which are important for our countries as we continue to endeavor to maximize benefits while maintaining sound sustainability of our shared tuna resources,” Hon, Giro said.

Hon. Giro strongly believed that through a strong PNA solidarity, members will continue to strengthen our regional collaboration and partnership.
