PM targets 40 gold medals for SI athletes at 2023 Games

With 1089 days to go, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare today opened the National Hosting Authority of the 2023 Pacific Games Office in Honiara— challenging the home athletes to target a historic goal medal record of 40.

Opening the office this afternoon, Sogavare revealed that Solomon Islands is well ahead of time in its preparation to host the Pacific Games compared to other previous hosts.

In that regard, he challenges the country’s athletes to prepare for the games, as his government’s expectations are very high in terms of gold medals.

“Our sports men and women must aim high to compete for every medal at the 2023 Pacific Games. We must increase our standing.

“The 2023 Games is a catalyst to uniting our nation. We are targeting 40 gold medals,” the prime minister said.

The NHA office is locate at the old Sea-King Restaurant next to the United Church in Central Honiara.

Sogavare said his government is committed to delivering a successful games.

He assured the Pacific Games Council and the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands that the government is committed to fund its share of the cost to hosting the games.

It was announced today that most of the games facilities’ about 85% have been taken by donors.

The PG2023 will be held on the 22-29 July 2023.
