The Leader of Opposition, Hon. Matthew Wale, accompanied by West Are’are MP, Hon. John Maneniaru, visited the Central hospital early this week, to see how our health preparedness plans for the Covid-19 are coming on.
The visit commenced a process that provides opportunity for both, the leader of the Opposition and Independent group, to visit our health infrastructure, equipment and systems, key to our Covid-19 preparedness plans.
“The visit was timely and important as the declared state of emergency will cease end of July 2020 and the question of whether to extend it or not will arise. For us to properly discharge our constitutional roles therefore it was important that we see for ourselves what is in place, and hear how and what our front liners have to say on our level of preparedness at this stage.”
“I am quite pleased with the efforts being put and I commend all our hard working health administrators, doctors and other support staff involved in their preparatory work. These are people who had to step out of their normal lives and take on the challenge of preparing our country for the worst case scenario. This is not an easy calling,” says Hon. Wale.
The party is scheduled to travel to the western province and the border next. Again, this is an opportunity for us to see how our front liners at the border and the provincial executive are doing in their efforts to ensure the virus does not enter the country.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader highlights that, “Just like Henderson, the border and Noro are also equally high risk areas for the Covid-19 to enter hence, it is important that we understand how our front liners there are doing, and if there are issues that need immediate attention.”
“The last 4 months has given us a lot of useful lessons and opportunity to put in place mechanisms to protect the health and safety of our people from the Covid-19. It is now important that we as leaders, reflect on these lessons and ensure that our way forward is streamlined so that it focusses our plans and limited resources on where it really matters.”
The group’s next outing will be to the border, followed by Malaita and Rennell and Bellona provinces.
