Foreign vessel detained in Noro

A foreign flagged tanker is being held in Noro, Western Province as it could be unfit to undertake international voyages.

Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA) confirmed that they have detained the foreign flagged tanker Kaiko Maru currently at anchor in Noro.

Director of SIMA Thierry Nervale said the vessel was subject to Port State Control because anchoring and operating in Solomon Islands and was found substandard with major deficiencies to rectify.

“The vessel cannot sail until a reinspection is conducted by SIMA,” he told SBMOnline. 

He explained that they suspected the ship holds fraudulent certificates meaning the vessel may not have inspected and certified in accordance with international conventions to undertake international voyages.

He adds there are concerning defects of the hull structure and watertightness.

Nervale said there are also deficiencies about fire-fighting systems and lifesaving appliances.

The vessel has been detained since last week.
