Prominent private lawyer Gabriel Suri has accepted an offer from Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale to serve as the country’s new Attorney-General.

Suri confirmed to SBMOnline that he had met with the Prime Minister and accepted the appointment.

“I have accepted the offer by the PM,” Suri confirmed tonight.

His appointment will be formalised by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission once its chairman returns from overseas.

Suri will replace outgoing Attorney-General John Muria Jr., who has reportedly already been informed of the change of leadership.

Suri previously served as Attorney-General under former Prime Minister Derek Sikua in 2008.

He also acted as a key legal figure for the former New Coalition—now the current administration—during its legal battles against the previous government in the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Those cases ultimately led to parliamentary proceedings that resulted in the motion against former Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, his removal from office, and the election of Matthew Wale as Prime Minister last Friday.

Suri becomes the first senior appointment announced by Prime Minister Wale following the naming of his full Cabinet yesterday.
