Workshop on impact base underway in Honiara

A five day workshop on Impact –based Forecast and Warning System is currently underway in Honiara. The training workshop is part of the Climate Risk Early Warning System for the South East Asia and Pacific Small Islands States.

Opening the workshop this morning Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology and Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands with World Meteorological Organization (WMO), [S1] Mr. Channel Iroi said the training workshop is intended to introduce the idea of Impact-based forecast Warning System to the staff of the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) as well as the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO. He said when fully developed the new system is expected to further enhance the effective delivery of important weather related information to the general public. 

Mr. Iroi added “The training workshop will be most important for those of you who use the data provided by the Met Service in the various work that you perform on a daily basis”.

 He therefore called on all participants to make good use of the opportunity and grasp as much information as possible from experts from abroad who will be doing live presentations online.

The Workshop is the initiative of the Solomon Islands Government and developed through a consultative process between the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), SIMS and its partners.

It is part of the Climate Resilience Early Warning System (CREWS)-Canada Sub-Project on Impact-based Forecast and Warning System for the South East Asia and Pacific Small Island States.

Initially planned to be a face-to-face training, it is now being conducted through virtually delivery online following travel restrictions due to COVID-19.

At the end of the training workshop participants are expected to

1. learn the basic concept of Impact Based Forecast; the process of implementing it; cascading of hazards, the risks and response matrices;
2. Experience hands-on collaboration between MET Service, NDMO and all stakeholders;
3.  Undertake a simulation exercise to demonstrate a scenario on how to apply forecast information;
4. Learn how verification of IBF is done using data derived from various sources including unconventional sources such as social media and  test the overall understanding of participants of the IBF approach and;
5. Come up with an agreed work plan that identifies implementing mechanisms to guide future actions in implementing IBF in Solomon Islands.

The workshop will conclude on Friday 30^th October 2020.
