Australian assistance to Solomon Islands for the Pacific Games 2023 is bearing fruit.
Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare MP conveyed to the Governor General of Australia His Excellency David John Hurley AC DSC (Retd) during the latter’s courtesy visit this week, Australia’s assistance towards PG2023 will leave lasting legacy for the country’s gain.
Prime Minister Sogavare acknowledge Australia’s support of $100 million for Solomon Islands hosting of the Pacific Games.
The government of Australia fully funded the upgrade of a number of School facilities around the City. While the primary reason of the upgrade work of the facilities is to ensure there are adequate rooms to cater for the 2023 Pacific Games athletes and officials, this work will leave behind a legacy for the schools because the renovated facilities will serve our students for many years to come.
Further, the extension of SIAF to provide necessary security during and after the Pacific Games ensures regional unity and inclusivity, PM Sogavare stated.
Solomon Islands is also thankful for Australia’s financial support for additional Police officers from the PNG Constabulary during the Games.
“Solomon Islands is grateful for the current support towards the various security and police projects on ground.”
The Governor General, H.E Hurley expressed thanks to Prime Minister Sogavare for the invitation and hospitality extended to him for the Pacific Games official opening adding, the visit is an opportunity to reaffirm the Australia- Solomon Islands bilateral cooperation.
Solomon Islands and Australia’s bilateral relations are guided by common regional priorities and the pursuit of social and economic development through various national development priorities including infrastructure, economic recovery, development, security, and through social development.
Apart from paying courtesy call on the Prime Minister, the Australian Governor General also attended the Pacific Games opening ceremony and events, opening of the Solomon Islands Meteorology Service Building and visit to the National Referral Hospital.
