NZ assures SI of strong and enduring commitment

The Government of New Zealand has assured Solomon Islands of its strong and enduring commitment as a bilateral partner.

The New Zealand Acting High Commissioner, Don Higgins met Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare this morning to reaffirm New Zealand’s bilateral relations and cooperation with Solomon Islands.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sogavare and Acting High Commissioner Higgins agreed, the two nations have a long history based on mutual cooperation and engagement

The friendly relationship between both countries will continue to build on the existing bond.

New Zealand’s assistance to Solomon Islands covers a wide spectrum of sectors including Education, Health, Fisheries, RSE work scheme among others.

New Zealand’s bilateral assistance in these sectors will continue while at the same time, look out for other priority areas identified by the government.

Solomon Islands and New Zealand commit to maintaining stability in Solomon Islands and promote a peaceful and secure Pacific region.

New Zealand further applaud Solomon Islands’ for reaching out to the wider Pacific through Foreign Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele and Police Minister Hon. Anthony Veke on the SI-PRC security treaty at the Pacific Islands Forum member countries Meeting in Suva.

“It is good to engage. Solomon Islands is doing it in a respectable way.”

Solomon Islands and New Zealand will further strengthen diplomatic relationships as the need for regional solidarity is more urgent now than ever before.

On New Zealand’s fear over Solomon Islands security treaty with China, Prime Minister Sogavare assured New Zealand that no military base will be built in Solomon Islands.

A strong and stable Solomon Islands is key to a resilient and stable region.
