Rescued duo now in SI High Commissioner’s care awaiting flight home

The two Solomon Islanders who were rescued in Papua New Guinea after 29 days in the ocean have now been in the care of SI high commission in Port Moresby awaiting their return home.

Livae Nanjikana and Junior Qoloni, were found about 250 miles off the coast of Papua New Guinea survived on oranges they had brought with them, coconuts they found floating in the ocean, and rain water. The GPS tracking device on their small, single 60 horsepower motorboat stopped working after they left for their voyage from the Mono Island in the Western province on 3 September.

On his facebook page, SI High Commissioner to PNG, William Soaki was pictured with the two whom he described as were miraculously rescued recently off the coast of Pomio, East New Britain province. Soaki said their survival story was a proof of the power of prayer and human resilience in the face of adversity.

“They are now under the care of the Solomon Islands High Commission awaiting repatriation,” said the high commissioner.
