The person who allegedly damaged three Bank South Pacific (BSP) Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) has surrendered himself to police this week.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ian Vaevaso told journalists this morning that initial report stated the ATM machines at Heritage Park Brach were vandalized by an unknown person on 24th April using a heavy object to damage it.

However, he said the suspect on the same day called in at the Central Police Station and informed the officers that he was responsible for damaging the machines. However, police didn’t arrest him on that day.

But Vaevaso said on 27 April (on Tuesday this week) he (the suspect) returned to the police station again where he was formally arrested and charged.

When asked by the press why didn’t the police arrest him after he admitted to damaging the machines on 24 April, Vaevesa explained that there were still no formal complaints against him at that time.

He said they can’t hold a person without a formal complaint to police as it is unlawful.

Vaevesa said at this stage police were unable to establish the motive(s) behind the damage of the machines— but this would be part of their investigations.

BSP said the ATMs would be out of service for sometime as they work to replace them.

The Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) has condemned the action and called on the public to respect public properties.
