Solomon Islanders are joining their Melanesian neighbors Papua New Guinea to mourn the loss of the founding father of the PNG Sir Michael Somare.

Somare’s death, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, was confirmed by his family early Friday morning.

In Honiara, Solomon Islanders have shown their sorrow through the laying of wreaths in front of the PNG High Commission Office at Town Ground.

SBMOnline visited the high commission this afternoon and seen wreaths and photos of the late Sir Michael being placed on the main-road just in front of the high commission.

Mourners drive to the high commission, lay their wreaths then drive away. SBMOnline also witnessed that the PNG High Commission is also open to mourners. The PNG flag is also flown at half mast.

Many Solomon Islands leaders and even the ordinary people had met the late Sir Michael during his time as the leader of the Melanesia’s biggest country.
