Met issues special weather advice as ‘Tropical low’ located off Makira

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) has issued a special weather advice current for the entire country (Solomon Islands) as a ‘Tropical low’ is located southeast of Makira Province.

In its fourth special weather advisory today SIMS says the situation is that at 5:00am this morning a tropical low with a central pressure of 998 hectopascals was located near 14.7 degrees latitude south and 163.5 degrees longitude east.

“This is approximately 233 nautical miles (432 kilometers) southeast of Makira province.”

“Winds of 25 to 33knots (46- 61 kilometers per hour) with rough seas and moderate swells (2.5-4.5m) is expected over Makira, Rennell/Bellona and Temotu province.

“Winds of 20 to 25 knots (37 – 46 kilometers per hour) increasing to 30 knots (55 kilometers per hour) at times with moderate to rough seas and moderate swells (2.5-3.0m) is expected over remaining provinces.

“Heavy rain and thunderstorms is expected over all provinces.”

SIMS warns people to take precautionary measures as bad weather associated with the tropical low poses threat to lives and properties.
