A 26-year-old man has been arrested for alleged rape of his 70-year-old grandmother in Big Gella in Central Province on 21 September .
Commissioner of Police Mostyn Mangau told journalists that the grand-mother was going out to relief herself on the beach at around 3am when her grand-son attempted to rape her.
“Whilst the victim was at the beach the suspect came from behind, grabbed her, closed her mouth with his hands and tried to sexually assaulted the woman without her consent,” he said.
However, the grand-mother had managed to escape. The suspect was later arrested and charged.
He will appear at Tulagi Magistrate Court on a later date.
Mangau appeals to the community in Gella to help police in the investigation with those having any information about the incident to come forward and report it to police.
Mangau appeals to the communities nationwide to respect “our” custom and to report any breaches of such matters like rape to the police.
