 The Solomon Islands Government (SIG) through the National Disaster Operations Committee (N-DOC) of the National Disaster Council (NDC) led a multi-sectoral team to the Atoll island of Sikaiana and successfully completed Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) to the remote atoll island of Sikaiana on Tuesday 31st March 2024.

On Sikaiana, the HADR mission focused on undertaking;

  • Initial Damaged Assessments (IDA) to ascertain the impacts of the recent 8 feet high swells that caused considerable damage to properties on the island on 22nd January 2024.

  • Undertake food security assessment on the livelihood of people on the island.

  • Consultations and community awareness on child and gender-based protection issues.

  • Provision of health services including general out patient, antenatal, immunization, vaccination and dental

  • Delivery of food supplies, 840 bags of 10kg rice (8.4 tons of rice) to the community

The HADR multi-sectoral mission comprised of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) deployed from Malaita Province, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs (MWYCFA) and the Climate Change Division (CCD) under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM).
