Highest positives in one day, 3 more deaths, more recoveries

COVID-19 cases have continued to surge with 303 new positives recorded for Honiara alone in the past 24 hours and three COVID-19 deaths, two in Malaita.

Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr Culwick Togamana in his update tonight said today in his is 13 days since the outbreak and “we have not only seen rapid increase of COVID-19 but it has spread to few of our provinces.”

He said there are 303 more people reported positive in the past 24 hours.

Togamana believes there a more cases in the communities and it could be more than 500 people infected per day.

With today’s figures, the country now records 1486 cases.

Deaths

The minister took the opportunity to inform the public that in the past 24 hours “we have recorded 3 additional COVID-19 deaths, two at Kilufi Hospital (Malaita) and one at Central Field Hospital.”

This means it now brings the total COVID-19 related deaths to 12.

As of Sunday, there were nine COVID-19 related deaths in Honiara.

The minister explained that from the nine, seve were unvaccinated, one with first dose and one fully vaccinated.

Togamana explained the deaths are labelled as COVID-19 related because they have underlying health conditions and were tested positive for COVID-19 at the time o death.

Recoveries

The minister said they are now starting to see many asymptomatic patients recovered as expected.

Togamana said statistic from the NRH Emergency Medical Team that tested all post COVID staff showed a very high recovery rate of 86% after day 10 of testing.

“This is welcoming news from the hospital’s emergency department as they look forward to getting nurses and doctors back in operation,” he said.
