The Solomon Islands national futsal team, Kurukuru will have ample time to prepare for the World Cup as FIFA has postponed the FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania and rescheduled the tournament to run from 12 September – 3 October 2021.
The Bureau of the FIFA Council made the decision to following a thorough assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recommendations made by the FIFA-Confederations COVID-19 Working Group.
SIFF President, William Lai said it is an unfortunate situation but welcoming news for the national team since their preparation was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Lai stressed Kurukuru will not rest on their laurels after the deferment of the World Cup.
“The team will resume training soon for few weeks in Honiara once the travel restriction is lifted by the government,” he said.
“It is our plan to send the national team to play in higher-level tournaments in Asia and Europe before the team leaves for the World Cup.”
Kurukuru coach Vinicius Leite is optimistic the team will resume training soon.
“As soon as we are able to train together we can hopefully bring the team over to Australia and continue with our preparations and to at least have two international overseas training camps,” he told RNZ.
Meanwhile, training in the country is still suspended due to government restriction under the State of Public Emergency.
