Police reveals a surge in overall crime rate trend for 2020 in comparison with last year with disturbances/disorderly behaviour, traffic and assault being the top three crimes reported.
Commissioner of Police Mostyn Mangau in his last press conference with the media for the year states that the there is an increase in overall crime rate for this year.
He reveals that in comparison, the crimes reported for last year was 8083 cases whilst 3,318 have so far been reported until December 21 against an estimated population of 800,000 people in the country.
It is an increase of 235.
Mangau says the figure has changed because “we have a good reporting system now in place where we capture reports throughout the country.”
“So there are a lot of work that has been undertaken by the crime statistics team to make sure that crimes are captured,” he said.
Besides that, he adds that people are also reporting crimes to the police.
Of the total, assault cases have also increased from 828 cases in 2019 to 956 this year whilst traffic offences fro this year is 1,232 compare to last year’s 1,175.
Mangau said a further detail including how many of those are prosecuted will be revealed early next month once the data is finalized by his officers.
