COVID-19: Police aware of “fake-news’ on COVID-19

Police say they are aware of an individual whose spreading false information on social media stating that Solomon Islands now has COVID-19 cases.

A facebook user has falsely posted that a number of police officers serving border have contracted COVID-19.

Solomon Islands to date is one of the only 12 countries that is COVID-19 free.

In his weekly national address this afternoon Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said: “we are still COVID-19 free. However, we must not be complacent and careless.”

The fake news post has angered many people and call for police to investigate and find out the real identify of the poster.

The RSIP Media Unit told SBMOnline that they’re aware of the poster and it has been dealt with by relevant authorities within the force.

Police had earlier warned against the spreading of false information about COVID-19. Two people have been arrested and are facing the court.
