Police have confirmed that charges have already been laid against those who were alleged to be responsible for the fatal Taimareho 1 sea disaster resulting in 27 deaths.

Almost a year ago on April 3rd 2020, 27 people were swept off board when the boat encountered rough seas—only six bodies were recovered.

The ship was carrying mostly constituents of West Are’are in a private charter of people fleeing to their homes from a possible COVID-19 outbreak in the capital.

Relatives of the missing passengers have been demanding for answers and an inquiry had been conducted and outcome had been given to the government.

When asked to confirm reports that charges have been laid against those that were responsible? Commissioner of Police Mostyn Mangau confirmed: “Yes charges have been laid and it is being forwarded to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecution).”

Mangau however could not reveal how many people were charged but promised to give more details next week once the DPP advises his officers.

SBMOnline understands that those alleged to be responsible were charged under the Shipping Act.
