Up to 2,000 marijuana plants were uprooted from West Kwaio in Malaita from seven separate garden plantations recently following a police raid.

Assistant Commissioner National Capital and Crime Prevention Simpson Pogeava told journalists today that officers from Auki uprooted the plantations along the Kwainafala River in West Kwaio. However, the owners of the marijuana plantations are still at large and police have appealed for their surrender.

Pogeava alleged that the seven gardens were a source of marijuana supply to other parts of the province.

He added that the substance itself (marijuana) has caused a lot of problem on Malaita and even to the general public in the country.

Pogeava confirmed that the community has also welcomed police action.

Police could not verify the street value of the destroyed marijuana plants.
