Fini new premier of Malaita after Waneta withdraws from race

Malaita Province now has a new premier. He is Martin Fini who stood unopposed this morning after his only rival Glen Waneta withdrew his candidacy at 8am.

Speaker of the Malaita Provincial Assembly Ronnie Butafa confirmed to SBMOnline saying that only this morning Waneta withdrew his candidacy –leaving Fini unopposed and he was sworn in as the new premier also this morning.

Fini is the provincial MPA for Ward 3 in Central Kwara’ae and was one of the key players in the non executive MPAs’ that led to the ousting of former premier Daniel Suidani on Tuesday in a motion of no confidence.

Based on the election cycle, Malaita province is expected to go to the polls around mid of this year.
