More than 2000 events were recorded since 2021 from Savo Islands from both seismogram gram detected and human felt volcanic earthquakes, this is according to the PS of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Electrification Dr Chris Vehe.
The events are said to have continued since then with the latest felt events were recorded in both January and February of this year.
PS Vehe also highlighted that the seismological section within the ministry that monitors these events are continuing their 24/7 monitoring of the volcano in Savo.
“With the experience that we have since last year until this year, we approached the World Bank and they have funded a monitoring station for us and here’s also support that we managed to source through assistance from the United States Geological Survey which donated three monitoring stations “, said.
With two stations now deployed with one in North West Guadalcanal and the other in Savo, PS Vehe stated that it has already helped the team to assess the behaviours and the movements that are occurring.
Meanwhile, assessments of the threats relating to the current volcanic activities are ongoing.
