2 die after log fell on them in logging camp in Makira

Two people were killed when a log slid from an excavator in a logging camp on Makira last week (July 30) and fell on them.

The excavator which was driven by an Asian was carrying logs and one slid from its bucket onto the two, killing both of them at Roto Logging Camp in the Weathercoast.

Initial report said that the deceased were local employees of Woodland logging company were taking their break while the Asian excavator operator was trying to pull one felled log from a concession area. While the operator struggled to lift the log, it suddenly slipped off from the machine and landed on the two deceased while they tried to escape.

Commissioner of Police Mostyn Mangau said two men tried to escape but unluckily they were hit by sliding log.

He said police had attended to the incident and an investigation was underway.

Commissioner repeated his call for logging operators to practice safety rules at all times during their operations in the logging camps.
