Munda Police in the Western Province are investigating the death of a young man who was caught in a reef when diving.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province, Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says the sad incident happened on a reef outside of Bebea village in the Nusa Roviana lagoon on 25 March 2022.
The deceased was accompanied by his small brother and his sister to a diving site called ‘Barrier reef’ located 100 metres from Bebea Island.
Lenialu said while he was diving, his brother and sister floated and waited in the canoe for about 15 minutes but their brother had not returned from beneath the sea.
They then called for help from other divers who were also diving next to them to search for their brother. They located the dead body lying on top of a coral beneath the sea.
Lenialu says the villagers called a scuba diver expert to retrieve the deceased and handed him to police for further investigation.
External medical examination has been done by medical authorities, he added
Lenialu says the amily and relatives of the deceased are satisfied with the death of their son and do not want any post mortem to be conducted.
Investigation continues into the death incident.
“My condolence to the family and relatives of the deceased during this time of sadness,” says Lenialau.
