Work is now underway to extend berthing space for patrol boats of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) Maritime Aola Base in Honiara with the construction of a dolphin wharf funded by the International Division of the Australian Defence Force as part of the Defence Cooperation Program (DCP).
The overseas company, McConnell Dowell is constructing the dolphin wharf with assistance from some local companies.
Director of RSIPF Maritime, Chief Superintendent Charles Fox Sau says, “The new wharf is positioned nine meters off from the existing one to enable the longer guardian class patrol boats to tie up at the Aola base with their bows over hanging to ensure a safe and secure berthing.”
Contractors on the Maritime Wharf Project moving the bridge to connect the current wharf to the dolphin wharf.
Australia delivered the first guardian class patrol boat, the RSIPV Gizo to the RSIPF last December with a second patrol boat of the same class expected to be delivered next year.
Chief Superintendent Sau says, “Members of the public travelling around the area of the Aola base by small boats or other means of sea transport are advised not to go too close to the construction site for your safety and the properties.”
Work on the Project started on 23 January 2020 and will be completed by the end of March this year.
