A special presentation featuring prominent and successful women leaders from the Solomon Islands was held at the SMI compound as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

Organized by the Student Association of USP, the session aimed to recognize the vital role women and girls play in education at local and regional levels. It provided students with the opportunity to learn from inspiring figures like Freda Unusi, Julie Haro, Dr. Donna Maria Wate, Lenny Olea, and Nihal Senertines.

Currently in their third week of studies, USP students found the event particularly motivating as they embarked on their academic journey for the year.

Abel Wanesuia, Deputy Chair for the University of the South Pacific Student Association Solomon Islands (USPASI), reaffirmed association’s support for young women’s academic pursuits.

“We celebrate women’s achievements at USP, in Solomon Islands, and globally. Our participation highlights our commitment to empowering young girls and women in education. There are no limitations based on gender. We were truly inspired by the presentations from the motivational speakers who shared their experiences with our students.”

He expressed his appreciation on behalf of USPASI and the students to the guest speakers for empowering women and girls through their stories of success.

“We believe the students gained valuable insights that will benefit them throughout their academic journey,” he added.

Maggie Peni, a final-year Social Work and Sociology major, shared how the session impacted her.

“Hearing from these inspirational speakers, especially successful women, has given me confidence and determination in my studies. The session was helpful, inspiring, and empowering, especially as I enter my third week back this year. As I approach my final year, this event reminded me to stay committed to my studies. The presentations and stories shared by these accomplished women were truly inspiring.”

Prior to the afternoon session, students participated in a march parade organized by the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs and Honiara City Council’s Women Division. This parade brought together women’s groups from government stakeholders, private sectors, and Civil Society Organizations throughout the Solomon Islands.
