Ulawa records peaceful, smooth and successful elections

Ulawa Island in the Makira Ulawa Province yesterday recorded a safe and peaceful elections.
According to the Royal Solomon Islands Police team deployed to Ulawa for the elections, they say the joint elections was peaceful and safe with no disturbances across the ten polling stations on Ulawa island in the Ulawa Ugi constituency.
Police officers were stationed at most of the polling stations, especially those with large number of voters and also they have one of their officers patrolling around Ulawa also checking on other polling stations.
As reported, most polling stations on Ulawa Island even though some polling stations that have a high number of voters opened after the official opening time, 7 AM in the morning, they
successfully finished voting earlier than expected.
From observations, many voters turned up to cast their votes in the morning part and by mid- day, many polling stations were empty with only few voters seen arriving in the late afternoon to
cast their votes.
Returning officer for Ulawa Ugi constituency says that he is very happy to see a good voters turn out in and also in the way people participated making it a very safe and a peaceful elections on the island.
Soon after the closing of all polling stations at 4 pm, electoral officials with the assistance from the RSIPF team then transported all the sealed ballot boxes and election kits to Taheramo Police station where they were kept safe waiting to be transported to Kirakira for counting.

A total of nine contenders contested the Ulawa Ugi parliament seat while 30 candidates contested the four Provincial wards in the Ulawa Ugi constituency in the Makira Ulawa Province.
