Whilst most of the political leaders take their vehicles back to their offices after the opening of the Chinese Embassy in Honiara this morning at Town Ground, Honiara City Mayor Wilson Mamae takes the long walk through the city streets to his office at the City Council.

The mayor catches attention as he walks through streets—unnoticed and also noticed by pedestrians and passing vehicles.

SBM-Online meets up with the mayor as he’s walking the stretch of road between Town Ground and the High Court accompanied by two journalists.

“I am only dropped off at wok-place and pick up after work. Most times I walk,” he says.

“I walk a lot,” he told this magazine.

He adds that walking allows him to see the problems and challenges the city faces.

“Though we can’t solve all the problems at least it allows me to see with my own eyes,” said Mamae.

He jokes that the only problem is he always does not have the money to give to all the people who asks him for assistance whilst he’s on the road.

Mamae says he also uses walking as a way of keeping fit and healthy.
