In a historic moment for the Solomon Islands, the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC), Ms. Christina Mitini, has been appointed to lead the g7+ Election Observation Mission (EOM)for the legislative and presidential elections in Guinea-Bissau, scheduled for 23 November 2025.

The observation mission is being deployed at the invitation of the President of the National Election Commission of Guinea-Bissau. Guinea-Bissau, located in West Africa, is a member of the g7+ group of conflict-affected and fragile states.

The team led by Ms. Mitini aims to support credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral processes that promote peace, stability, and democratic governance.

“As a coalition of conflict-affected countries, the g7+ is uniquely placed to observe and support electoral processes in our member states,” the g7+ Secretariat noted. “This mission reflects our commitment to peer learning, cooperation, and promoting resilient institutions.”

The mission will operate from 18 to 27 November 2025, observing key stages of the electoral cycle, including the final day of campaigning, election day operations, the opening of polling stations, voting, counting, tabulation of results, and the post-election environment.

The EOM core team includes the Chief Observer, two experts from the National Electoral Commissions of Timor-Leste and Sao Tome and Principe, three officials from the g7+ Secretariat, and two local assistants, including the NEC focal point for the g7+ and the g7+ focal point within Guinea-Bissau’s Ministry of Planning.

The mission builds on the g7+’s ongoing Fragile-to-Fragile cooperation, notably the support provided by the Government of Timor-Leste to Guinea-Bissau during the 2014 voter registration and election preparations. Following successful support missions in several member countries, the institutionalization of g7+ Election Observation was formalized in March 2023 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The g7+, established in 2010, is an intergovernmental organization of 20 countries affected by conflict and fragility, working to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development.

A local women’s leader said Miniti’s appointment is welcome news and a source of empowerment for women in the country.
