PRIME Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, MP has expressed his appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for “the positive steps taken in the war against pollution in the introduction of a number of green initiatives.”

This was during his remarks as guest of honour at the People’s Republic of China’s National Day celebration yesterday at the Heritage Park Hotel.

Speaking specifically on Climate Change, the Prime Minister stated, “as a small island state, Solomon Islands together with our neighbouring Pacific Island states are concern about the attitudes of big industrialized countries on the emission of greenhouse gas.

Prime Minister Sogavare further acknowledged steps taken by China in dismantling coal-fired power plants, reduction of overall emission levels and cutting particulate-matter emission rates.

Other measures taken by China include introduction of better regulation; funding a greener future valued at trillions of USD; and establishment of three sustainable development zones in Shenzhen, Guilin, and Taiyuan which will implement the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

“These are positive moves which bring comfort to small and vulnerable states like Solomon Islands – that a powerful country and a sizable emitter in the world not only listens to the concern of small vulnerable countries in the world, but commits resources and taking positive steps to address pollution.” He stated.

“In this regard, we are comforted and indeed note with great admiration the positive steps taken by China in the war against pollution,” the Prime Minister stated.
