Six senior officers of the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) has left the country on 15 February 2020, to attend the first 2020 Early Management Development Program (EMDP) from 17 – 28 February at the Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) Academy, in Australia.
Australian Government is funding the program through Memorandum of Understanding between Correctional Service of Solomon Islands and Queensland Corrective Services in relation to a twinning partnership for delivery of training programs to staffs, signed on the 09th September 2018.
Speaking during a brief session held for QCS participants at the Correctional Headquarter last week, CSSI Commissioner Gabriel Manelusi, says to meet the challenges of the next decade CSSI must transform into being “forward-thinking with a public safety consciousness” – forward-thinking means we are strategic, innovative and evidence-based. Top tier public safety means we are trusted, respected and valued for our expertise as a public safety agency.
“Every day, more than 594 Correctional Service officers work to make CSSI a safer place through the humane containment, supervision and rehabilitation of offenders”
“We are embracing this once in-a-generation opportunity to transform the business of correctional services in CSSI”
He adds generational shift is already happening, as work continues to implement the fundamental changes brought about by the QCS for CSSI by previous Diploma students of CSSI. The expectation from the Government and people of SI and CSSI Executive is to put to good use and value the golden opportunity invested to us by the Government and people of Australia.
“You must demonstrate discipline and commitment, and raise high the flag of SIs and CSSI and values of the two agencies”, says Manelusi.
Meanwhile the Australian High Commission, Justice Program Manager Deltina Solomon said on behalf of the Australian Government, “we are so happy to invest in your training which will enhance your career progression and organisation’s service delivery. We know and understand that the world is changing and every day we come up with new ideologies of doing things. We need to keep up with this training to equip ourselves to be able to do the core services that we are entrusted with”.

Out of the six senior correctional officers attending, 4 are males and 2 are females with 2 of the officers being provincial based.
Commissioner Manelusi thanked the Australian Government for the tremendous support and having confidence to Correctional Service Solomon Islands.
