Money raised during this year’s Charity Golf tournament will be donated towards efforts to manage and recover from the devasting bushfires in Australia which has destroyed thousands of homes and left 25 people dead.

A total of $48,720 was raised from teams’ registrations, individual donations and sausage sizzle organised on the day by the SICCI staff.

“Twenty-two (22) teams of four players consisting of regular Golfers and some first-timers competed in the 18-hole Ambrose event with each team paying a registration fee of $2,000” said Ms Naomi Mara, the SICCI Membership and Services Officer and Coordinator for the Golf Day.

“What matters most for the Chamber, on behalf of our members, is to show that we care about the people affected by the bushfires.”

Ms Hilda Lamani who is a SICCI Board members, as well as one of the players on the day, also acknowledged Australia as a long-time supporter of the Chamber and therefore, private sector development in the Solomon Islands.

“Australian Government support for SICCI as well as other partners and organizations that promote growth in Solomon Islands’ economy, ensures an enabling investment environment.

“The funding grant has meant that the Chamber is able to convene events that provide learning opportunities, as well as structured spaces to canvass members’ views on business enabling issues.”

“There is also the very practical resource through the Australian Volunteers program, of the Coral Sea Cable volunteer, which members have found useful in understanding the implications both cost-wise and inherent responsibilities with new enhanced internet capabilities,” Ms Lamani said.

SICCI thank all members and businesses who have sponsored teams and those that have turned up for the event ensuring the Charity Golf tournament was a success.

“Thank you to the companies who sponsored teams, the event supporters, Sullivans, Bank South Pacific, ANZ, Bulkshop, Global Vision, and also Miss Solomon Islands 2019-2020 Miss Gladys Habu, and the Honiara Golf Club. Everyone helped ensure that the day ran smoothly with ample opportunity for some friendly competition on the green,” Ms Lamani said.

It was a strong competition for the top spot and the winners were Team Wuhan, followed by second-placed Team NFD. Miss Solomon Islands, Miss Gladys Habu used the opportunity to share about her charity platform of Cancer Unit at the National Referral Hospital (NRH), before prizes were handed out to the winners.
