The Prime Minister said Solomon Islands had a tumultuous journey in relation to our national security and  have come a long way in addressing our security challenges.

He said the two strategies will provide the platforms to guide our respective security offices and agencies in carrying out their duties.

Prime Minister Sogavare said National Security goes beyond the remits of the Ministry Police, National Security and Correctional Services.

“The expanded scope of national security covers many areas including from Climate Change, Health, Ethnic conflicts, border security, land disputes, pests infestation, corruption, economic and environmental security, unemployment challenges, natural disaster, law and order, migration, social discourse, biosecurity, food security, education, cyber security, transnational crimes, foreign interference and terrorism,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the expanded scope of national security was affirmed by Forum leaders in their meeting in Nauru in September 2018, under the Forum’s Boe Declaration.

“I am pleased that the national security strategy we are launching today has incorporated all aspects of these expanded scope of national security through its 13 national Strategic goals, and provides the platform to coordinate actions to address all these areas,” he said.

Prime Minister Sogavare said the National Security Strategy highlights our security environment, discusses our security capabilities, and emphasizes the fundamentals of the National Security Strategy and its strategic actions.

He said it also incorporates security architecture and governance mechanisms.

The Prime Minister said procedures to respond to security threats along with a national alert system, and early warning system, will be developed as the strategy is rolled out during implementation

“Together both strategies lay out the plan of action, for all Law Enforcement Agencies, in implementing their respective security policies. Law Enforcement agencies will no longer work in isolation,” he said.
