PM LAUNCHES TWO KEY SECURITY STRATEGIES

PRIME Minister Manasseh Sogavare today has launched two key security strategies developed by the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA).

The two security strategies are the National Security Strategy and the National Border Strategy.

The launching was done at the Office of the Prime Minister & Cabinet (OPMC) via a zoom conference.

Speaking at the launching, Prime Minister Sogavare said the vision of the Security Strategies are simple as it projects a ‘Solomon Islands that is safe and secure, where all her citizens are able to coexist peacefully, for a prosperous future’.

The Prime Minister said the National Security Strategy is the overarching security plan for the country.

He said the National Border Strategy on the other hand, expands the border aspects of the national security strategy further, given the important emphasis we put on our international borders and their security.

“Today we live in a world that is continually changing which exposes us to new opportunities as well as threats.  The world today is no longer one that only gives us goods and services, fast reliable communication, unlimited travel and tourism, education, trade, and commerce to name a few,” he said.

Prime Minister Sogavare said the world today also opens up new risks and new threats such as this new COVID-19 pandemic.

However, he said there are other threats that we cannot see or easily understand and track, such as elements of cybercrime.

“We may not be able to identify, let alone contain, and neutralize or address many of these unseen threats effectively,” he said.

Prime Minister Sogavare said the term National Security has always been linked to the obvious physical threats to life, or the country’s economic wellbeing.

He said that is why the first Ministry that jumps to people’s minds when national security is raised is the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services.

The Prime Minister said that is also why it is the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services that has taken the lead role in coordinating the development of these two key ‘whole of government’  strategies, that now provide the strategic framework within which our national security, and border security considerations are implemented.
