“Be Prepared in Body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment, and do it.” (Baden-Powell)

Last week it was reported that His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Rt Rev David Vunagi, GCMG, was installed as the Seventh Chief Scout of the Solomon Islands Scout Association (SISA).

Under the Solomon Islands Scouts Association (SISA) Constitution, the Governor General is the chief scout.

In accepting the invitation, Sir David said he hoped to see the Scout Movement in the Solomon Islands alive again and to be robust.

The story of scouting began in August 1907 in England and was founded by Robert Baden-Powell.

Today, there are more than 50 million Scouts, young people and adults, male and female, in over 200 countries and territories. Some 500 million people have been Scouts, including prominent people in every field.

I, too, was a scout in my early youth and value to this day the core values of the scouting movement, which are:

  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Care, and
  • Belief

I share His Excellency’s wish to see scouting become robust again in the Solomon Islands because scouting is all about building confidence and self-esteem, learning important life skills and leadership skills, team building, outdoor adventure, education, and fun!

Scouts learn how to make good choices and to take responsibility for their actions so that they are prepared for their adult life as independent persons – and what could be more important for the future leaders of the Solomon Islands?

Yours sincerely
