RECORD ENTRIES EXPECTED FOR SOLOMON AIRLINES PEACE MARATHON

– Marathon to take place on Saturday 23 September

Organisers are expecting a record number of entries in the Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon this year, as excitement mounts and athletes across the Pacific prepare for the the 2023 Pacific Games.

Last year the popular Peace Marathon attracted more than 1000 runners who took to the roads in Honiara and outskirts. This year even more entries are expected including international entrants travelling to Solomon Islands to compete in the half and full marathon categories.

The 2023 Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon will take place on Saturday 23rd

September with the running events starting and ending at Town Ground Rugby Stadium.

The biggest ever Peace Marathon will also be supported by 70 volunteers provided by the Pacific Games Organising Committee to support the smooth-running of event logistics and as a test run in preparation for the Pacific Games.

Registration for the 2023 Solomon Airlines Peace Marathon opens on Friday 1st September at Solomon Airlines Point Cruz office and via phone 24911.

Runners can compete for a host of attractive sponsor-donated prizes by entering one of the following five categories:

  • 2 kilometre Fun Run (Registration Fee $10.00)

  • 5 kilometre Fun Run (Registration Fee $10.00)

  • 10 kilometre Long Distance Race (Registration Fee $20.00)

  • 21.1 kilometre Half Marathon (Registration Fee $30.00)

  • 42.2 kilometre Full Marathon (Registration Fee $30.00)

While originally intended as a social event to bring the people of Honiara and the Provinces together in a fun activity, the annual Peace Marathon has grown to be one of the most contested running events in the Pacific.

“The Solomon Airlines Peace marathon is a very social event for locals and is also an important annual sports event in the South Pacific and a showcase for Solomon Islands,” said Mr Napoleon Padabela, Acting CEO of Solomon Airlines.

“As we prepare for the Pacific Games, it provides an ideal opportunity for leading athletes to compete and build confidence as part of their conditioning for the games, and for our Pacific Games volunteers to practice their roles,” he added.

“At Solomon Airlines, we are tremendously proud to be both the Platinum, naming rights sponsor of the Peace Marathon and a presenting sponsor for the 2023 Pacific Games in Solomon Islands massive year of sports,” Mr Padabela said.
