The Chinese Embassy in Honiara has urged people to refrain from making irresponsible, unprofessional and even inflammatory remarks out of political purposes on their plan to bring in security personnel to guide its embassy.

In a statement today, Office of spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Honiara said the international community recognizes that countries may take necessary security measures to protect their own diplomatic and consular missions overseas.

“We urge some people to refrain from making irresponsible, unprofessional and even inflammatory remarks out of political purposes,” the spokesman, said.

The issue of China bringing in its own armed personnel security guards were leaked in the social media in their correspondences with the government. They made the request soon after the November Riots and Looting.

The spokesman explains that in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in 1961, the receiving State is under a special duty to take all appropriate steps to protect the premises of diplomatic missions against any intrusion or damage and to prevent any disturbance of the peace of the mission or impairment of its dignity.

The spokesman adds the international community recognizes that countries may take necessary security measures to protect their own diplomatic and consular missions overseas.

“China fully respects the sovereignty of host countries and has the right to take necessary measures to protect its diplomatic missions overseas from existing or potential security risks, based on respect, equality and reciprocity. It is a sovereign issue and in line with international norms as well as laws of host countries,” the spokesman states.
