Police have started controlling traffic at the Honiara Central Market and various other locations in the capital city.

Supervising Director Kukum Traffic Centre, Inspector Doreen Vaea said in a police statement that the operation is purposely to make sure a safe and smooth flow of travel for all road users including emergency vehicles, public buses, pedestrians and vehicles in the area of operation.

He said one of the hot spot locations in Honiara City that causes a lot of traffic jam during peak hours is the Central Market bus stop where traffic officers are currently controlling to make sure all road users abide by the traffic law.

Inspector Vaea added that anyone who break the Traffic Act will be arrested and prosecuted in court.

“We cannot tolerate the inconsiderate drivers who do not respect other drivers and other road users.  Let us be responsible citizens of our capital city and the nation at large.”

Apart from Honiara Central Market bus stop, traffic officers will also monitor the following areas:

  • Commonwealth street;
  • Point Cruz Hot bread roundabout;
  • Honiara Central Magistrates’ bus stop; and the
  • Honiara City Council roundabout,

“The traffic operation is to enforce Solomon Island (SI) road traffic laws to ensure a safe and continuous flow of traffic, ensure public buses do not block the traffic and comply with all relevant laws. “I appeal to all vehicle owners, pedestrians and drivers to cooperate with police during the operation. We will be checking for driving and vehicle licenses and third party documents during the operation,” Inspector Vaea said.
