RSIPF investigates fatal motor vehicle accident in Honiara

A male person in his late 20s died as the result of motor vehicle accident near the Iron Bottom Sound (IBS) Hotel in west Honiara on 6 March 2021 after the vehicle hit a tree on the side of the road.

Director of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) National Traffic Department Superintendent Fredrick Satu says, “The car was travelling in a westerly direction when it accidently veered off the road at the slight bend opposite the IBS Hotel and hit a tree on the side of the road. As a result the male passenger sitting with the driver in front of the vehicle was injured and later died at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) on 6 March 2021.”

Superintendent Satu adds, “Both the RSIPF Forensic team and Traffic Investigation Department officers attended the body of the deceased at the NRH morgue.”

“I want to appeal to witnesses of the accident to come forward with information to help police with their investigation.”

“Police have continuously warn drivers not to drink and drive as it could result in a tragic accident. This particular incident is a good example of drivers choosing not to listen to advice that has been consistently put out through all the media,” says Superintendent Satu.

“This is very sad as the irresponsible consumption of alcohol continues to claim the lives of our citizens. I want to appeal to drivers or vehicle owners to heed the continuous warning that if you drink, please do not drive. You are simply putting your own life and that of others in danger,” Superintendent Satu emphasises.

The driver of the motor vehicle that was involved in the tragic accident has been admitted at the NRH in Honiara whilst the police have established an enquiry file.

“Our condolence to the family and relatives of the deceased following the tragic loss of their beloved son,” says Superintendent Satu.
