Police Commissioner Mostyn Mangau has reminded all sea users to make sure that the boats and other assets used for transporting passengers across the sea are sea worthy.
This comes after officers of the RSIPF in Tulagi successfully rescued four banana boats between Ngella and Honiara that were carrying a total of 18 passengers during the rainy period last week.
The four boats were transporting passengers from Honiara to Ngella with two of them facing mechanical faults while the other two were reportedly short of fuel while on their journey.
“The important thing we must observe when travelling is the weather pattern and we also have to ensure that the assets we use for transporting in our waters must be sea worthy. We must also consider the distance of the journey and the amount of fuel needed before attempting to travel”, said Mangau.
Commissioner Mangau also added that the police continue to face such similar issues almost every year and reminds boat owners to properly plan their trips prior the journey by providing equipments for the safety of everyone onboard.
