In wake of recent issues on social media on allegations of kidnapping and kidney harvesting, the government will be pushing with the Cyber Security Legislation to address growing concerns on the online space.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele in respond to a question on the issue today, said the government through the ministry of communication is working on proposed legislation—which is already in a draft form.
The legislation was drafted last year but was deferred following mounting opposition from the general public.
However, events in the past weeks, which unknown users used fake accounts to spread lies causing fear amongst the public—on allegations of kidnapping and security threats— has led to some people calling for introduction of the cyber security law.
Manele confirmed that the previous government had already started a draft and they would be looking into.
“It is important and we are working on that,” said the PM.
He confirmed that he himself was a victim of people using his name and photo on a fake account.
Special Secretary to the Prime Minister Albert Kabui, a lawyer by profession, confirmed that the draft is now with the ministry of communication and he would be liaising with them.
Manele said also part of the cyber legislation will be a data centre to also addressing cyber security.
The new legislation is expected to brought to parliament in the first quarter of next year.
