A pile of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) was discovered in the St Nicholas Anglican College compound, Central Honiara today forcing the school to close its doors tomorrow to allow for the safe removal of the bombs.

The bombs were uncovered besides one of the houses in the school compound.

Pictures shared on social media showed the pile of UXO being exposed after digging was carried out on the site.

Speaking to SBMOnline tonight, RSIPF Media Unit confirmed the discovery of the UXOs and said officers have already been sent to the site.

“They have cordoned the area and the school will close until all the bombs are removed,” a spokesperson for the Media Unit states.

He also adds that two bombs were removed today with the rest expected to be taken to safety by tomorrow.

Police could not confirm the number of UXOs discovered on site but indicates that it’s a huge pile.

Police also confirms that the bombs were part of the US artillery during the WWII.

St Nicholas Anglican School has already issued a public notice, informing its students that after the discovery of the pile of bombs, there will be no school tomorrow to allow for the Bomb Disposal Unit to remove the UXOs.
