First ever National Cybersecurity Policy launched

The first ever National Cybersecurity Policy was launched this morning in Honiara with the intention to response to cyber security needs of the country.

Minister of Aviation and Communication Frederick Kologeto in launching the policy said with the anticipation of increasing dependence on internet and ICT the safety and security of users are becoming a global challenge.

“The internet and cyber space becoming a playing ground for criminals where illegal and unethical practices are carried out to exploit vulnerabilities in the digital system in victimizing users, businesses and the government,” he said.

Kologeto said given the risks that associated with technology this policy is developed with intention to actively response to “our cyber security needs and to align international best practices.”

The National Cybersecurity Policy sets out the policy of the government with respect to creating a safe and secure cyber environment.

It is structed in three parts, starting with vision and mission, then it sets out the government’s cybersecurity objectives together with its strategies for achieving those six objectives and the third part provides the implementation plan.

Under its implementation strategy, and to facilitate the development of the National Cybersecurity Policy the Solomon Islands Cybersecurity Working Group (SICWG) will be formed. The group will include representatives from various government and non-government institutions that are currently active in the field of cybersecurity.
