A medical team from China from Nanfang Hospital, Gaungzhou City, Guangdong Province, comprising of, Urologist professor Dr Tan Wanlong, Urologist Dr Gao Yubo attending Surgeon, Anaesthetist Dr Liu Weifeng and nurse, Mr Zhou Kai have conducted successful surgeries on elderly male patients with urology or prostrate issues at the National Referral Hospital (NRH), last week.

The team came with their specialized equipment to perform the medical procedure known as as, Plasmakinetic Resection of Prostrate which involves the use of special energy source (plasma) to remove the benign prostate tissues that causes obstruction to urine flow.

Head of Surgery Dr Rooney Jagilly explained that the visit was very important as most of these male patients have a urinary catheter that they carry around for months, to allow free flow of urine without obstruction, waiting for such an opportunity. He described the operations as intensive with time spent on each operation averaging around 3-4 hours for each patient.

“Their coming also helps to reduce back log of cases with issues related to male’s sexual reproductive organs but more importantly it enables fostering of a close relationship between the hospital and their Institution and moreover personal connections with the specialists. This is crucial for sharing of information and advice in the long term”, explained Dr Jagilly.

During their operations, the team worked closely with Dr Augustine Melly NRH general surgeon who has been earmarked to be trained in urology which involved teachings at bedside and in the operating theatre. The visiting team also delivered lecture to the hospital doctors last week Friday before their departure.

Despite the team leaving a urologist with the Chinese Medical Team who are here for one year will continue to provide specialist care in urology as well as with one on one training.

Health Permanent Secretary Mrs Pauline McNeil thanked the visiting team of specialists stating that despite their short visit, they have made great impact to the health and therefore improving the wellbeing of the patients.

“The visit is part of the overall cooperation in the health sector as agreed between the People’s Republic of China and the Solomon Islands Government with a signing of an MOU over 2 years ago. As such the Ministry would like to convey its sincere appreciation to the government and people of China not only for this particular support but overall support in the health sector that continues to positively impact the lives of Solomon Islanders.
