Honiara City’s newest pedestrian crossing at Honiara City Council was officially handed over today, thanks to Solomon Ports for making it possible.

CEO of Ports Eranda Kotelawala handed over the crossing to City Mayor Eddie Siapu and a rep from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development following the opening of the pedestrian crossing.

Kotelawala said this milestone achievement when it comes to safety of pedestrians.

“We decided to do this sometimes ago after he had some discussions with HCC and MID. This is part of our social corporate responsibility and obligation as an SOE to the country and to support the government in some of its development initiatives and the HCC,” said the CEO.

He said the main reason for the establishment of the crossing is to establish safety for pedestrians crossing the road which was absent from the area.

Kotelawala said where the pedestrian crossing is one of the busiest places in the city which is also in front of the Holy Cross Cathedral.

Siapu on behalf of HCC thanked SIPA for funding and building the pedestrian crossing including solar lights.

He said SIPA funding and building of the crossing is a living testimony and a shining example of its commitment to support the national government and communities.

“I see this as an achievement for SIPA on its social corporate responsibility and that SIPA is not only driven to achieve financial profit but also social profits,” the mayor, said.

He said HCC wants to see roads and bridges in Honiara developed to modern standards and is happy that this pedestrian crossing is completed for people to use.

The mayor said to ease traffic flow traffic officers and his law enforcers will be on site to control movement of pedestrians and traffic.
