THE Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) has thanked the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for the timely donation of masks and hand sanitizers.

On Friday 6th November, the PRC Embassy in Honiara handed over 1000 disposable masks, 100 hand sanitizers and 50 T-Shirts to the MASI Vice President, Mr. Douglas Marau.

Mr. Marau on behalf of MASI thanked the PRC Solomon Islands Embassy Second Secretary Mr. Shen Weizu for the kind donations.

Mr Marau said the donations are timely, as the country now records confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Marau said in the fight against COVID-19 in the country, journalists are also playing an important role as front liners.

“Our local journalists are also front-liners and we must continue to appreciate them for going out into the field, gathering information and keeping the public informed on a daily basis,” he said.

“The donations will greatly equip local journalists in ensuring they are safe while reporting on COVID-19 in the country,” he said.

Since Solomon Islands recorded confirmed cases in the past few weeks, most gatherings and events are now requesting people to wear masks.

During this COVID-19 pandemic, media organizations are also faced with challenges to maintain their operations thus such requirements, though small, are often overlooked.

Therefore, Mr Marau said the need for journalists to be well equipped is necessary while carrying out their duties.

Meanwhile, Mr Weizu said the PRC is honoured to support MASI.

He said the donations although small is aimed in supporting the role of local journalists in Solomon Islands.

The masks and sanitizers will be distributed to the various media organisations this week.
