Man dies after being hit by an excavator bucket

A young man died yesterday after he was hit by a bucket of an excavator in the Lunga River area, east Honiara.

Commissioner of Police Mostyn Mangau told journalists this morning that the man between 17-18 died of injuries after being hit by the bucket of an excavator in an alcohol related incident.

The excavator was digging for gravel in the Lunga River area when the incident occurred.

Mangau says the young man was drunk and running in an out of the area of operation and even though he was told to stop he had not stopped.

“As a result he was hit by the shuffle (bucket) of the excavator causing injuries to his head,” he states.

Mangau confirms that the young died as a result of the incident.

He adds the driver escaped the scene for security reasons and police had attended to the incident. He reiterates that his officers have also met with both parties, the company and the family of the deceased to ensure peace prevails in the community.
