The Honiara City Council has given until the end of February (28) for all derelict vehicles that are parked in public spaces, roads, and access areas to be removed before they take action.

In a public notice, HCC Clerk Justice Denni said: “If any derelict vehicles are not removed by Friday, 28 February 2025, the Council will use its authority under the applicable ordinances. This may involve removing the vehicles at the owner’s expense and/or imposing fines. Your cooperation is essential for the safety and well-being of Honiara Cityresidents.”

The Clerk today issued the notice to all vehicle owners and mechanics responsible for derelict vehicles parked in public spaces, roads, and access areas stating immediate action is required to remove any, if not all, vehicles that are obstructing public spaces or road reserves.

“Derelict vehicles cause significant disruption to the flow of traffic and pedestrian movement, blocking access and creating unsafe conditions. These vehicles obstruct the right of way for licensed vehicle users and the public, which can result in accidents, traffic congestion, and delayed emergency services.”

He added: “In the interest of public safety, it is essential that owners or mechanics of derelict vehicles take immediate steps to remove and properly dispose of such vehicles. By voluntarily complying with this notice, you will help maintain a safer, cleaner environment for all members of the community.”
